Lesya Ukrainka’s heritage in sources of Foreign Ukrainian Studies

Section: Contexts of Lesya Ukrainka’s biographical world: A view from the 21st century

Abstract: The aim of the research is to analyze important aspects of the life and work of Lesya Ukrainka and to evaluate them in the works of scientists of the Ukrainian diaspora. The methodology of studying this material is based on integrated use of the following research methods: source study, historical-typological, comparative-historical (i. e. through analysis of phenomena in the context of cultural development); and intertextuality theories. The used approaches to systematization of the material are those developed in works of modern domestic and foreign experts in the fields of source heuristics and psychology of creativity. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that the discussed sources, still little studied and scarcely introduced into scientific circulation, are being entered into a new comprehensive informational bibliographic resource, which is being created at the VNLU since 2019 on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the writress’ birth; and such resource is one of a kind. Sources of foreign Ukrainica introduce new materials about the life and work of Lesya Ukrainka into scientific circulation and are a unit of the abovementioned library-wide scientific and bibliographic project. Conclusions. These novel sources of Foreign Ukrainian Studies in the field of Lesya Ukrainka knowledge are considerable information resources for rethinking the role of Lesya Ukrainka in the history of Ukrainian culture, creating a new story of the development of Ukrainian literature, and reaffirming the Ukrainian identity. They collect and summarize knowledge about Lesya Ukrainka’s creative heritage and personality, form a new vision of the importance of the writress’ work, her role in the shaping and building the novel cultural space of Ukraine; and they introduce information still little known to Ukrainian scientists into scientific circulation.

Keywords: Lesya Ukrainka, Lesya Ukrainka studies of scientists of the Ukrainian diaspora, book collections at the Department of Foreign Ukrainian Studies, scientific and publishing project “Bibliography of Lesya Ukrainka”.
