Section: Biographical studies

Abstract: The paper’s objective. The activities of Ukrainian intellectuals in Soviet times is not enough explored. In particular, with regards to internal ideological opposition among humanitarian intellectuals, as well as the opposition of socially-political groups and their centers. The objective of this paper is to depict the activities of the Ukrainian humanitarian intellectuals in Kyiv in the first half of 1920s, based on the analysis of sources of personal origin of a Ukrainian writer and editor Oleksa Varavva (Kobets). The methodology of research is based on principles of scientific prudency, systematic approach, and historical analysis. The basic historical methods have been applied – bibliographical, problem-thematic, micro-historical, retrospective, prosopographical. Scientific novelty comprises of use of rarely known materials as well as yet unpublished materials that are firstly included into the scientific research – memoirs and epistolary of Oleksa Varavva. Conclusions. To show the environment and activities of Ukrainian humanitarian intellectuals in Kyiv of the first half of 1920s the personal materials have significant value. Memoirs, yet not well known, and a part of which were not earlier published “Materials for the correspondence autobiography” of a writer and editor Oleksa Varavva, show important figures and an atmosphere of Ukrainian renascence of that time. Those documents strikingly depict the involvement of Ukrainian intellectuals into the rebellions (G. Chuprynka), ideological unacceptance of Soviet power (G. Kosynka). Also, the opposition of literature-art intellectuals through periodicals “Nova Gromada”, “Globus”, “Proletarska Pravda” is shown. O. Varavva worked closely with neoclassics, who were nationally oriented and shows how they opposed to the regime.
