New materials to the biography of the Warsaw orthodox metropolitan Makarius (Mykhailo Oksiyuk) (1884–1961)Section: Biographical studies Abstract: The aim of the work. The article reviewed and supplemented with information on the life and work of the famous scientist and orthodox bishop Mychailo Oksiyuk (monk name – Macarius) (1884-1961). The methodology is based on the principles of historicism, objectivity, as well as on general historical methods (chronological, retrospective, problem-thematic). The scientific novelty of the work is the introduction into scientific circulation of documents that shed light on the little-known page of the biography of M. Oksiyuk. A review of biographical essays on the life and work of M. Oksiyuk is made. There are serious gaps in the information relating to the period of the 1920s and 1930s. It was concluded that it was impossible to find out all the circumstances related to the work of the former professor of the Kyiv Theological Academy (КТА) in the National Library of Ukraine, the Byzantological Commission of the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, on the basis of sources available to researchers. The factors that allowed M. Oksiyuk not only to avoid political repressions, but also to make an administrative career in the system of the People’s Commissariat of land affairs of Ukrainian SSR, remain unknown. Documents are published that shed light on the events of the first half of the 1920s. From 1923 to early 1925, M. Oksiyuk was considered a candidate for the position of professor at the Studium of Orthodox Theology at the University of Warsaw. Oksiyuk was invited to Warsaw by Metropolitan Dionizy (Valedynsky). The professor agreed to go to Poland for permanent residence and had contacts with representatives of the Polish diplomatic mission in Kyiv. The diplomat’s report on the meeting and conversation withM. Oksiyuk in November 1923 contains assessments of the personal characteristics, political views and positioning of the former professor of the KТA on a lot of church-administrative problems. Among other things, M. Oksiyuk declared his commitment to the idea of autocephaly of the Orthodox Church in Poland and his disagreement on this issue with Russian Patriarch Tikhon (Bellavin), who stood for maintaining the subordination of Orthodox dioceses to Moscow within the restored Polish statehood. Conclusions. The information contained in the documents preserved in the Polish Archive of New Acts significantly complements the data on attempts to involve former graduates and teachers of the KTA in the development of Orthodox theological education in interwar Poland. These materials are also an important source for researchers of the biography of Metropolitan Macarius – head of the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church in 1951-1961. Keywords: M. Oksiyuk (Metropolitan Macarius), Dionizy (Valedynsky), biography, Kiev Theological Academy, The Faculty of Orthodox Theology at the University of Warsaw, diplomacy of the II Rzeczpospolita.
