The characters of Ukrainian patrons as seen by the editors of the Baroque époque church service book

Section: Book and personality

Abstract: The aim of the work is to define the chronological framework, factors, and forms of the patroonship phenomenon documentation in the structure of the Ukrainian church book. The methodology is based on heuristic analysis of bibliographic data and historiography, which point out the financial support sources of the Ukrainian church book of 16-18th cc. Such analysis enabled to single out the scope of persons and institutions that promoted the development of national book printing. The content analysis of dedications to church service books reveals the Ukrainian editors’ point of view to the patroonship of early modern époque book culture. The scientific novelty is connected with the systematization of data on persons, who supported old Ukrainian church service book printing, and the micro sources to patroonship phenomenon exploration, included in the dedications to Ukrainian church service editions. The formation of printing patroonship support glorification in Ukrainian editions of I. Fedorov is observed. On the example of dedications to M. Bernavsky, B. Stetkevych, T. Zamoysky, P. Mohyla, I. Obydovsky, and I. Skoropadsky main characteristics, which book editors impute to real or potential patrons of printing-houses, are revised. Conclusions. Due to political and economical factors, during the last decades of 16th – the first decades of 18th cc. all Ukrainian publishers of Church-Slavonic church service books needed financial support and protection of social elite powerful representatives. Hence, the majority of church service books of this period included pieces of evidence on their patroons – representatives of kniaz and shliahta families, powerful clericals, and from the end of 17th c. – kozak leaders. The dedications to Ukrainian church service old-printed editions glorified generosity, high position in society, erudition, and loyalty to orthodox faith. These features the editors attributed to those representatives of a social elite, from which they attained or expected to attain personal profit, finance, or protection for the printing-house.
