Lesya Ukrainka in the national information space

Section: Contexts of Lesya Ukrainka’s biographical world: A view from the 21st century

Abstract: The goal of this research is to analyze the nature and features of Lesya Ukrainka’s (1871–1913) representation in the national information space, including her personality, life story and creative heritage. Further analysis is given of the achievements, shortcomings and unresolved issues in developing methods and forms of communication activity involved in this representation. The research methodology stems from joint application of tools used in communication studies: both analytical (analysis, synthesis, generalization, explanation, systematization and classification), and empirical (observation, description and comparison) methods. Scientific novelty of this paper lies in its intentional focus on the issues concerning forms and methods of representing significant names of the national past in different segments of information space. Topics studied include various forms and means of representing Lesya Ukrainka in digital information space – on literature and cultural studies sites, in fulltext digital libraries of Ukrainian literature and literary criticism, on a comprehensive popular science resource “Lesya Ukrainka: Life and Works Encyclopedia (Леся Українка: енциклопедія життя і творчості)”. Special consideration is given to new forms and methods of communication, as successfully used by cultural institutions, information centers and research institutions. Conclusions. The experience of representing the personality and creative heritage of Lesya Ukrainka testifies to the effectiveness and social value of combining the efforts of various institutions and agencies (scientific, cultural, educational, publishing, informational, governmental, journalistic, creative, public). The celebration of Lesya Ukrainka’s 150th anniversary revealed the previously mostly untapped opportunities to move a lot of the intellectual and creative communication – such as discussions with scientists, writers, public figures – into the virtual, using various online audio and video platforms as well as the social media. This makes possible informational outreach of relevant cultural information to all regions, thus in fact uniting the national information space.

Keywords: biography, Lesya Ukrainka, national information space, digital encyclopedias, personal biographical archives, intellectual and spiritual dialogue of generations, modern digital means of intellectual communication.
