Section: Contexts of Lesya Ukrainka’s biographical world: A view from the 21st century

Abstract: The aim of the work. In the article the relations between Larysa Kosach (Lesya Ukrainka) and Olga Kobylyanska in main contexts for such a topic – public and family and private are analyzed. The relationship between both women and their chosen men is important. Relationships with members of the opposite sex for various reasons did not give the necessary level of understanding – neither for unity in love, nor even for friendship. Therefore, it was necessary to look for the ideal communicant, or in Olga Kobylyanska’s terminology, “resonator”, among the representatives of their sex. The methodology is based on the principles of historicism, objectivity, as well as on general philological methods – problemthematic, comparative-historical, typological. As well the methodological basis was the crossing of gender theory and the biographical discourse. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the study of the psychological communicative field created by the epoch and its public and private conventions. It is important to study the main levels of this communicative field, such as: worldview, psychological, ethical, cultural and aesthetic, and so on. The article focuses on cultural, psychological and gender aspects of historical period in the Ukraine at the break of the XIX and XX centuries. Typology of personality has been developed on time of the youth of the both girls. Special attention is paid to social norms as the most ancient ways to keep humble of a woman. This strategy is part of the raising a women how the “second sex” to male society. Conclusions. The main achievement of the work was to show the mechanism of social interaction, common at the break of the XIX and XX centuries. It turned out that it was very difficult for a talented, independent woman to establish an equal and free relationship with man. Whereas the understanding of a woman with a woman was much easier. An example of this is the love-friendship of Lesya Ukrainka and Olga Kobylyanska.
