Research methods are biographical, cultural-historical, psychological, elements of mythology method. The novelty of the study is that biographers usually marginalize the issues of physical education and sports, which had an important place in writer’s life. Now it has become important to refute the cult of the “Great Ailing” (O. Zabuzhko), which has long been canonized in Ukrainian society. The study systematizes the facts that testify to the strategy of physical education in Lesya Ukrainka’s family, identifies the sports in which the writer and her relatives were engaged or interested. There is the analysis of the physical activity of the characters of the writer’s works, as well as peculiarities of author’s interpretation of the concepts of spiritual and physical competition. Conclusions. Lesya Ukrainka represents the awareness of physical culture as an integral part of culture in general. The writer’s noble family purposefully instilled in children the skills of physical exercises, especially gymnastics. Lesya Ukrainka herself has always tried out new proposals for physical therapy, massage, and climate-therapy. Swimming became her primary source of muscular joy. The writer watched the training of her younger brother M. Kosach and her cousin S. Drahomanov, as well as their sports competitions in Italy. Her works reflect the tendencies of penetration of physical culture and sports into the way of life of young people at the turn of the XIX and XX centuries. Lesya Ukrainka’s artistic world is marked by the presence of a hero, whose psychotype is characterized by a rare willpower, inexhaustible motivation, focus on victory and other qualities inherent in a person capable of struggle, competition, self-realization in spite of circumstances.
