A peasant, an intellectual: The “short story of life” by Vasyl Stefanyk

Section: To the 150th anniversary oF Vasyl Stefanyk

Abstract: The aim of the work is to consider the life and work of Vasyl Stefanyk as atext (short story as a life drama) on the basis of comparing (auto) biographical and artistic discourse of the writer. The research methodology is based on chronological and problem-thematic methods in combination with the methods of historical biography, hermeneutics, structural-semiotic analysis, history of everydaylife. The scientific novelty lies in the analysis of the creative biography of the writer as a component of the history of reading, social history, history of ideas and cultural memory of Galicia. The relationship between autobiographical narratives and the writer’s works in the context of the concept of life as creativity and creativity as life is shown. The main categories of the writer’s thought are singled out, on the basis of which his self-representation is built and in line with which his artistic thought developed. The role of book culture in its intellectual formation is clarified. The perception of the figure of V. Stefanyk in his lifetime and later criticism against the background of the formation of the “Stefanyk line” in literature has been studied.
