Biography in independent Ukraine: Establishment, achievements, unresolved problems, tasks, and future prospects

Abstract: The article is dedicated to the analysis of characteristic features and peculiarities of the main stages of development of the national biography during 30 yearsof Ukrainian Independence. The purpose of the study is to identify changes in thegeneral worldview of, and choice of problems for biographical research, and to evaluate its current state and leading trends of its evolution, upcoming tasks and future prospects. The research methodology is based on the joint application of general scientific methods of analysis and synthesis, generalization, explanation, systematization and classification, and empirical – observation, description andcomparison. The scientific novelty of the article is its attempt to identify and generalize the patterns of evolution of ideological principles and conceptions of the purpose of biography within humanities research in independent Ukraine, to expand the range of problems and topics addressed, enrich the forms and methodsof biographical writing, and adopt the theoretical and methodological legacy of European and global humanities and culture. The characteristic features, achievements and problems that arose at different stages of Ukrainian biography, currenttrends and prospects for its further evolution are studied. Conclusions. Significant qualitative differences are highlighted, which determined the state and directionof the national biography’s progress throughout its formation in the first decadeof independence, its progress between the two Maidan Revolutions, and the current rise due to social, political and spiritual changes in Ukrainian society of recentyears. Understanding and taking into account these features is important to help researchers, research institutions and publishers define up-to-date priorities, objectives and prospects.
