Muzychko Oleksandr Representatives of historical science as bearers of honorary statuses of Odesa scientific institutions in the 19th and early 20th centuries: Prosopographical portraitSection: Prosopographical studies Abstract: The purpose of the study is to present historians in scientific institutions of Odesa in the 19th and early 20th centuries. in honorary status (honorary member, doctor). The research methodology is based on the complex use of general scientific methods of analysis and synthesis, generalization, explanation, systematization, classification, and empirical methods – observation, description, and comparison. The scientific novelty of the publication lies in the fact that for the first time in the format of an article, a thorough prosopographical analysis was conducted in the long chronological framework of the phenomenon of the honorary status of historians in the Odesa scientific environment. Quantitative and qualitative parameters of honorary members, both foreign and at that time domestic representatives of historical thought and science, manifestations of their connections with the Odesa group of scientists were studied. Conclusions. The election of honorary members and doctors has become a permanent practice in the Odesa group of scientists. It most often summarized the already existing established connections of individual professors or groups with the figure, or it was a kind of "honorary send-off". But there was also a completely applied function of the elections – reviews prepared by professors, they are important material for the history of science, they provide an opportunity to trace scientific connections, reflections, historiography, supplementing biographical data not only about the elected, but also about the initiators of the elections – prominent Odesa scientists. At that time, the process of discussion of eminent persons was a stimulus for revitalizing the scientific process. And yet much more important were the purely symbolic aura that enveloped the university walls, acting as a spiritual engine, and the traditions inherent in the existence of such a complex society as the university, its crystallization in the overall development of the country.
