“Carry further with your Hrushevsky…”: Anna Klyuchko’s letters to Volodymyr Doroshenko from the UVAN archive in the USA

Abstract: The purpose of the article is to clarify the reasons for the appearance in the Soviet and post-Soviet discourse of the stereotyped idea that Mykhailo Hrushevsky was the evil demon of Ivan Franko, that there were constant disputes and disagreements between the famous historian and the famous writer. The research is based on biographical, memoir, and epistolary sources, which indicate that the daughter of Ivan Franko, Anna Klyuchko, who had a very prejudiced attitude toward Mykhailo Hrushevsky, unknowingly participated in the creation of such a myth. Soviet socialist propaganda used fragments of her memoirs without her permission and put them at the service of the totalitarian regime. Scientist Volodymyr Doroshenko spoke against the falsification of the truth about the relationship between Ivan Franko and Mykhailo Hrushevsky, who in his correspondence with Anna Klyuchko tried to convince the writer’s daughter of a different opinion. The research methodology is based primarily on archival and source research, using biographical, political, and cultural historical approaches, analytical-synthetic and inductive-deductive methods. The scientific novelty of the research consists in the scientific substantiation of documented objective facts of the mutual creative and productive cooperation of Ivan Franko and Mykhailo Hrushevsky. For the first time, Anna Klyuchko’s letters to Volodymyr Doroshenko, which are published from the scientist’s archive stored in the Ukrainian Free Academy of Sciences in the USA (UVAN), are being put into scientific circulation. The letters make it possible to establish the root cause and trace the unfolding of the controversy between them, which grew from a private to a public sphere. Based on the analysis of the letters and polemical articles of Volodymyr Doroshenko and Anna Klyuchko, the conclusion that the scientist tried to be objective in his assessments of the relationship between Hrushevsky and Franko is substantiated. Instead, Anna’s criticisms of the historian had a very subjective and emotional nature and psychologically imitated the opinion of her mother, Olga Franko.
