Shalak Oksana Sources to the reconstruction of Kalenyk Sheikovsky’s scientific biography (1835-1903)Section: Sources of biographical research Abstract: The purpose of the article is to study, analyze and systematize the sources that cover the figure of the linguist, ethnologist, folklorist, publisher Kalenyk Sheikovsky, his scientific and public activities. The study uses general scientific methods of analysis and synthesis based on historicism and objectivity, which allow the study of events, behavior, actions in the context of the formation of scientific principles of Ukrainian folklore and linguistics in the second half of the nineteenth century. Make it possible to identify the range of scientific communication, to determine its contribution as a philologist, whose workhas not lost its significance so far. The scientific novelty of the article lies inthe identification and analysis of documents that shed light on the scientific activities of K. Sheikovsky. The focus is on significant events in the activities of the scientist, reflected in the letters, petitions, examination protocols, memoirs, and little-known research of the scientist. Conclusions. K. Sheikovsky wasone of the first to create a dictionary of living vernacular, introduced an apostrophe into the spelling system, formed a comprehensive approach to the study of folklore of a particular region. However, his figure is currently of interest not because of his personal contribution to science. The biography of the scientist strikes with its typicality in the confrontation of Ukrainian science and culture with the Russian-imperial persecution, the unrealization of the powerful potential of the scientist and the persistent struggle to defendone’s own scientific views. Few sources for the reconstruction of the biography do not make it possible to reproduce it in its entirety, but mostly testify to themain dates and facts, and also reveal important details of the scientific and personal life of K. Sheikovsky. In addition to petitions, censors’ conclusions, letters, memoirs, specific sources include passports under folklore samples, which certify the dates and places of fixation of individual versions, as well asthe names of informants and correspondents of the folklorist. Keywords: Kalenyk Sheikovsky, biography, epistolary, methods of fixing folklore. Author(s) citation:
