Epistolary dialogue of active members of the Shevchenko Scientific Society Yukhym (Eufimiy) Sitsinsky and Mykola Petrov

Abstract: The purpose of the article through the epistolary of two scientists Yu. Sitsinsky and M. Petrov to analyze a separate period in their biographies, analyze the history of their cooperation, highlight scientific priorities, outline the main events of scientific life, around which the correspondence revolved, interest, concern or admiration arose through. In the investigation, general scientific methods of analysis and synthesis, as well as source studies methods, based on historicism and objectivity, are used, which make it possible to study the epistolary narrative. They enable the generalization of the most important as a canvas for the picture of the world of history researchers, churches and monasteries of Podillia, as well as folklore, which for M. Petrov and Yu. Sitsinsky became an additional source in the study of those former sacred buildings that remained only in legends and tales. The scientific novelty consists in revealing the possibilities of the epistolary as a source for reconstructing the biographies of scientists, in revealing the hidden subtexts of the letter dialogue, which make it possible to analyze not only the chronology of events, but also to recreate the laboratory of scientific research, the method of collecting material and the editorial principles of its publication. Conclusions. The letters of Yu. Sitsinsky and M. Petrov are evidence of the 20-year stage of life of both scientists. In their epistolary, the scientific problems faced by both researchers during their correspondence were raised. These are the need for artistic works and photographs in the study of architectural features of monuments, the reliability of documents for describing monasteries and churches, involvement in the analysis of chronicles and church liturgical books, the need for questionnaires and programs for collecting and studying folklore material related to the existence of former monasteries. Ego-documents include a number of surnames related to scientific issues that interested both of scientists, and reproduce the events of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, scientific life, the publishing process, issues that were resolved by scientific journals and church periodicals, local history and historical museums.
