Biographical dissertations by Ukrainian historiographers (1991-2021) through the prism of quantitative methods

Abstract: The purpose of the article is to identify how the current requirements of modernization of biographical discourse are realized in Ukrainian biographical studies. The object of analysis is an array of abstracts of dissertations on biographical topics in the specialty "historiography, source studies and special historical disciplines" that have been defended in Ukraine over the past thirty years. The methodology is based on the analysis of the content of methodological plots in the abstracts of historiographical dissertations a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods: in particular, the latter were implemented based on the analysis of the relational database of abstracts built in Microsoft Access. In total, the database includes data on 453 historiographical abstracts. Data from the "methodologically" loaded parts of the abstracts were entered into the database (relevance, subject, object, goals, tasks, methodology used, scientific novelty, the content of the first theoretical section of the dissertation). In addition, the author used a qualitative analysis of the full texts of the abstracts to ensure that the specified methodological approaches and methods were applied during the research and reflected in the conclusions of the work. The novelty of the study lies in the fact that is not only determined the thematic spectrum of historiographical biographical dissertations and considered the methodological approaches used by their authors, but also is characterized the communicative relations between historiographers in this field at the level of scientific leadership, opposition and scientific institutions. Conclusions. The study revealed an increase in the popularity of biographical topics and an expansion of the circle of scholars whose biographies modern researchers study. The study also revealed the growing attention to methodology in conducting biographical research. The formation and development of the school of intellectual biography in Ukrainian science can be considered the embodiment of these trends.
