“I don’t blame myself for being odd”: About Kyiv art critic and museum worker A. V. Artiukhova-Ivanova

Section: Biographical research

Abstract: The aim of the work is, in the context of an issue of the humanization of the past, to discuss an outstanding person, a talented art critic, and a Kyiv museum worker from the second half of the 1920s and the beginning of the 1930s, Adelaida Volodymyrivna Artiukhova-Ivanova. The research methodology is based on principles of scientific objectivity, systematicity, and historicism. Also, we used general historical methods, such as bibliographical, problem-thematic, and bibliographic heuristics. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that this is the first complex investigation of the biography and artistic achievements of A. Artiukhova made within the bounds of one article. Backed by F. L. Ernst’s diary "Art Museum", we specified the types of work that A. Artiuhova-Ivanova conducted in the All-Ukrainian Historical Museum named after T. Shevchenko (now – the National Art Museum of Ukraine). The main publications of A. Artiukhova-Ivanova are revised. On the basis of A. Artiukhova’s diary from the end of 1930 to the beginning of 1931, we introduce to the scientific circulation information about her attempts to support Public Library of Ukraine scientific secretary M. Ivanchenko and their friendship before the arrest. On the basis of the archival investigative file of 1935-1936 on Artiukhova, the peculiarities of her arrest and accusation were revealed. Conclusions. The article proposes to correct the mistakes in the bibliographic data on Adelaida Volodymyrivna Artiukhova-Ivanova, for instance, the date of her birth and information on Sergii Hryhorovych Tytarenko, her husband. At the same time, the biographic issues, which were unresolved yet, were settled: what was her maiden name; who was her husband and what happened to him; and, what is most important, what is the date of A. Artiukhova-Ivanova’s death. Our investigation enabled us to collect a bibliography of her publications, including her main articles, published in editions of the Ukrainian Scientific Institute of Book Science. Her work with the Ukrainian Bibliological Association is also presented. The notes from the diary helped us to reveal the personal life of A. Artiukhova-Ivanova as well as the picture of social life in Kyiv in the 1930s, for instance, the experience of passing packages to prisoners. The investigation convincingly proves the groundlessness and unfairness of A. Artiukhova-Ivanova’s accusation of counterrevolutionary actions. A new page in the history of Ukrainian book science, art criticism, and biography was written.
