Biographical essay of the Mukalov family through the prism of archive-criminal cases of the OGPU-NKVD

Section: Prosopographical studies

Abstract: Aim of the work. The life and activities of Kyiv lawyers and their families in the early years of the Bolshevik regime have been little studied. This is especially true for the active participation of Kyiv lawyers in the struggle against the regime in the 1918-1920s. The purpose of the work is an attempt to reconstruct the life path of lawyers from the Kyiv Mukalov family based on the analysis of criminal cases fabricated against them by the OGPU-NKVD in 1927 and 1937, also other archival sources, memoirs and memoirs of contemporaries, works of historians. The research methodology is based on the principles of historicism, objectivity, as well as general historical methods – biographical, chronological, retrospective, prosographic, problem-thematic. Scientific novelty lies in the introduction into scientific circulation of previously unknown and little-known biographical information of lawyers from the Kyiv Mukalov family based on historical sources found. The main sources of scientific value in establishing the biographical information of the Kiev lawyers Mukalov are archival and criminal cases of the brothers Olexii and Georgy Mukalov, materials from foreign archives, memoirs of contemporaries, works of domestic and foreign historians. Conclusions. To restore the pages of the life path and activities of Kyiv lawyers in the 1920s-1930s materials of archival and criminal cases are of particular importance. The destruction by the NKVD of the personal archive of Olexiy Mukalov, the burning of his personal file of the Kiev defender, the destruction of archival documents of the Yurburo and the Yursektor of the Council of People’s Commissars of the Ukrainian SSR in July 1941, which entered a new history under the name "archivocide", and the lack of information about members of his family required an expansion of the circle of search for biographical sources in foreign archives, memoirs and memoirs of participants, researches of historians. The discovered materials made it possible not only to reproduce the unknown pages of the biographies of Kyiv lawyers from the Mukalov family, but also to show their active struggle against the Bolshevik regime.

Keywords: biography, Mukalov brothers, lawyer, defender, NKVD, family, OGPU, the "Trest".
