Publishing activities of the Shevchenko Scientific Society in Germany in 1947-1951: Projects and figures

Abstract: The goal of the work. On the basis of a wide range of archival sources, to analyze the prerequisites and reasons for the emergence of realized and unrealized publishing projects of the Shevchenko Scientific Society in Germany in 1947-1951, to find out their relevance for historical science. The research methodology is based on the principles of historicism, objectivity, as well as on general historical methods – chronological, retrospective, problem-thematic and statistical-analytical. The scientific novelty of the work occurs in the comprehensive analysis of the development of the publishing activity of the Shevchenko Scientific Society in Germany in 1947-1951, the period of Di-Pi, shows its traditions and the development of new projects that were important for Ukrainian science. On the basis of archival materials stored at the Ukrainian Free University in Munich, unrealized editions "Ukraine under the Soviets" and "Our Losses" are shown. Conclusions. Despite the difficult living conditions in the camps and outside them, in the conditions of the post-war period, members of the revived the best traditions of the publishing business, started in Ukraine, and founded new projects that found their development in the diaspora. Among the achievements of the Shevchenko Scientific Society in Germany are four volumes of "Notes of the Shevchenko Scientific Society", the pages of which contain monographic studies by L. Okinshevich "The Significant Military Society" and A. Yakovliv "The Ukrainian Codex of 1743 ‘Rights by which the Little-Russian people are judged’", a collection of scientific works on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of Khmelnytsky, a bibliography of foreign publications on Ukrainian studies, three issues of the magazine "Present and Past" еtc. The members of the society implemented the new project of the three-volume general "Encyclopedia of Ukrainian Studies", which refuted the falsification of the historical past of the Ukrainian people by Soviet science. The book series "Library of Ukrainian Studies" was also born in Germany. The collections "Ukraine under the Soviets" and "Our Losses" remained unrealized publishing projects, the individual texts of which required high-quality revision, but due to the lack of necessary sources and literature, this could not be done.
