Research activities of Oleksandr Ohloblyn in the court of Ukrainian genealogy in 1951-1963 (Some remarks on the scientific biography of the historian)

Section: Biographical research

Abstract: The goal of the work is to analyze the scientific research activities of Oleksandr Ohloblyn in 1951-1963 (the period after moving to the USA anduntil the creation of the Ukrainian Genealogical and Heraldic Society, in whose activities he took an active part) based on published works, investigations and articles. The research methodology is based on the principles of historicity, objectivity, systematicity and scientificity. The research used general scientific (analysis and synthesis, classification) and historical (problematic-historical, comparative, chronological) methods. Scientific novelty. For the first time, the scientific work of Oleksandr Ohloblyn in the area of Ukrainian genealogy in1951-1963 was comprehensively analyzed, in particular, in relation to the study of methodological and historiographical problems of Ukrainian genealogy, the origin of the famous Cossack-elderly families of the Hetman region and elite branches of Ukraine in the 17th–18th centuries. Conclusions. During the years1951-1963, O. Ohloblyn published a significant number of works on genealogy, using his own numerous archival findings. The researcher was engaged instudying the genealogy of representatives of the Novhorod-Siversky circle, whowere natives of noble and Cossack-elderly families of the Left Bank. In the sethorough studies, a picture of the social and political life of Chernihiv-Siverregion at the end of the 18th century was highlighted through the biographies of famous Cossack-noble families. The contribution of O. Ohloblyn to the development of methodological and historiographical problems of Ukrainian genealogy is significant. A number of articles by the historian on this topic, published in various periodicals of the diaspora during 1951-1963, convincingly prove that genealogical research abroad did not stop, including due to the active activity and enthusiasm of O. Ohloblyn.
