Kyiv archeologist and collector Turvont Kybalchych (1848-1913)

Abstract: The aim of the work. The study is related to the examination of the Kyivperiod of the biography of the amateur archaeologist T. Kybalchych – the time of his residence in the second half of the 1870s – at the beginning of the 20th century in the Kyiv suburb of Lukyanivka. It was then that T. Kybalchych became a researcher of archaeological monuments in Kyiv and the founder of one of the first private public museums in Kyiv. The purpose of the work is to clarify the contribution made by T. Kybalchych to the formation of Ukrainian archeology and museum affairs. The methodology is based on the principles of historicism, objectivity, as well as on general historical methods – chronological, retrospective, problemthematic and statistical-analytical. The scientific novelty of the work consists in the clarification of new biographical information about T. Kybalchych, as well as the reinterpretation and new interpretation of already known sources relating to the archaeological activities of T. Kybalchych in Kyiv. Conclusions. The figure of T. Kybalchych as an archaeologist and museum curator has not yet been properly appreciated. At the same time, it should benoted that it was T. Kybalchych who first began studying such archaeological Ukrainian monuments as the Aksyutyn mounds on Posulla, the Annunciation Church in Chernihiv, partially destroyed as a result of a landslide; conducted archaeological exploration near the Kyiv suburban villages of Mykilska Slobidka, Osokorky, Voskresenka, Troyeshchyna and Vygurivshchyna, where he discovered archaeological evidence of human activity from the Neolithic to modern times. T. Kybalchych also paid a lot of attention to the creation and operation of the first public museum in Kyiv. But many unresolved questions remain in his biography.
