Changing world of a 19th-century Ukrainian nobleman: Case of Mykhailo MarkevychSection: Biographical research Abstract: The aim of the article is to analyze the worldview preferences, activity priorities and everyday life of the Ukrainian nobility of the 19th century on the example of the life story of one of its representatives. This is Mykhailo Markevych, the younger brother of historian and ethnographer Mykola Markevych. For researchers Mykhailo Markevych remains on the margins of the history of the famous family to which he belonged. But the sources helpus understand the rather complex lifeworld of this person, a representative of his time and social strata. The methodology. We have used methods such as historical and comparative, historical and biographical, problematic chronology, and personalization of sources. The scientific novelty. For the first time the biography of Mykhailo Markevych is reconstructed due to the introduction of new sources, primarily narrative texts of personal origin – correspondence and diaries from the archives of the Galagan family. This made it possible to deepen the understanding of the role of the kinship factor in the social communication network of the Ukrainian nobility. In the study of Mykhailo Markevych’s personal life, authors focused attention was paid on the circumstances of his economic, social, and public activities that were typical for the nobility of Ukraine in the 2nd-3rd quarters of the 19th century, in particular, the participation of the Ukrainian landowners in the events of the peasant reform. Conclusions. There construction of Mykhailo Markevych’s life deepens the understanding of the life of the Ukrainian nobility in social, economic, family, and domestic features. This makes it possible to assess more impartially the role of this execution in the history of the 19th century and to question the assertion that the Ukrainian nobility lost its national identity completely due to its incorporation into the ranks of the imperial nobility.
