Mykola Illich Storozhenko (1836-1906): Cultural and intellectual communication with the contemporaries

Abstract: The purpose of the article. Based on memories, letters and archival materials, reproduces the direction of personal and scientific communication of the famous literary critic Mykola Illich Storozhenko (1836-1906), who was implemented as an overseas expert, for the historical reality of that time. During his studies and work at Moscow University, foreign trips, connections with scientists, to find a circle of his communication between cultural figures of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Research methodology. This article uses descriptive and hermeneutic methods, theoretical analysis and synthesis that allow systematization and generalization of materials, inclusiveness of their general characteristics. Scientific novelty. M. I. Storozhenko’s circle of acquaintances, connections with scientists of that time, dialogue with them were not yet in the field of view of researchers. Therefore, it is important to reconstruct the vectors of personal scientific communication of the scientist recorded in the memoirs and correspondence of M. I. Storozhenko, the role of contemporaries in his creative and career growth, which make it possible to understand the main events of his life. Conclusion. The biography of M. I. Storozhenko is saturated with a huge number of personal and scientific communications that he established since his student days, which were often preserved and strengthened throughout his life, and actually consists of a multitude of communications tha the carried out or in which he was involved. On the example of his biography, one can consider not only the role of Ukrainians in imperial science and culture, but first of all the fate of a scientist who, despite the circumstances, became the most famous Shakespeare scholar, communicated with the most authoritative scientists in the world, never forgetting his Ukrainian roots. M. I. Storozhenko’s scientific communication with his contemporaries appeared in various forms of communication, mainly at the level of “teacher-colleague-student”. The biography of M. I. Storozhenko appeared as a path of an individual who managed to maintain his national identity outside his homeland, especially in the context of scientific relations with figures of Ukrainian science and culture.
