Collective portrait of Polish students of Kharkiv University in the 19th – early 20th centuries in terms of history and historiography

Abstract: The purpose of the article. The author examined certain statements in the sources and studies regarding the number and composition of Polish students of Kharkiv University in the 19th and early 20th centuries, its socio-cultural and socio-political characteristics. Research methodology. The author used the findings within the interdisciplinary direction of research - imagology (it is about the social functions of ethnic representations, problems of perception of the "other" and cultural interaction). The methods of source analysis were used, the emphasis was on discourse analysis, as well as the method of researching specific historical situations. Scientific novelty. For the first time, the author comprehensively analyzed various sources (statistical information, lists of students, memoirs, correspondence, etc.), as well as the conclusions of scientists regarding the number and main characteristics of the composition of Polish students of Kharkiv University in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Emphasis is placed on debatable statements and personal considerations regarding these problematic points are expressed. Conclusions. In the end, the author noted that Polish students were a significant part of the student body of Kharkiv University, starting from the 1830s. Their number varied from a few people to more than a hundred students. In total, from the 1840s to 1915, at least 1,150 Polish students studied at the university. In percentage terms, their share ranged from 4 to 20% of the total number of students at the university. One can see a short-term decline in their numbers in the late 1840s, a fairly long decline with small spikes in the late 1850s, mid-1860s, and also in the 1870s. Instead, there was a noticeable increase in the early 1840s, early 1850s, late1860s, second half of the 1880s, after 1905. They mostly studied at the medical and law faculties. It can be stated that Polish youth significantly influenced the formation of traditions of freedom-loving in the youth environment, and Polish student organizations became a model for other university students. In the course of cultural interaction and ideological disputes, students of different ethnic groups had a complex search for their own identity and, ultimately, amodern national consciousness was formed.
