Biography of a woman doctor as a component of the study of the history of the women’s movement in Galicia: Theodosia Tuna-Nadraga (1893-1976)

Abstract: The purpose of the work is to use the example of the biography of the Ukrainian Galician doctor T. Tuna-Nadraga to demonstrate and reveal the possibilities of the development of Ukrainian medical biography and prosopography as a component of historical biography, as well as to present the problem through the prism of gender studies, to show the role of women in the medical environment of Galicia and Central-Eastern Europe. Research methods. The article uses the methodology of historical biography, methods of analysis and synthesis, as well as a gender approach. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that, for the first time, it highlights the life path of a Ukrainian doctor from Galicia through the prism of the historical experience of the region and Ukraine in the 20th century, using new source material. Conclusions. The biography of Teodosia Tuna-Nadraga shows the complexity of the gender breakthrough in the medical field of Galicia, Austria-Hungary at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. It also demonstrates how Galician women tried to acquire new and new levels of education, how they mastered new professional niches, outlines the situation of a woman in the context of the medical environment, recognition of her subjectivity in medicine. The biography of T. Tuna-Nadraga also shows the everyday life of Galician women and at the same time the trials that awaited the doctor in the context of the extreme experience of Western Ukraine during the First World War, the Polish-Ukrainian War of 1918-1919, the Second World War, the first post-war years and deportations. The analysis of the biography of T. Tuna-Nadraga proves the need for the study and development of medical biography as a field of Ukrainian historical-biographical studies, which has a significant research perspective.
