Abstract: The aim of the article is to analyze autobiographical writing in the face of traumatic experience, based on the Polish edition of Stanislav Aseyev’s book “Light Road. Concentration Camp in Donetsk” (original title “Світлий Шлях”: історія одного концтабору”). The author of the Polish translation is Marcin Gaczkowski, the book, which consists of Aseyev’s memoirs and fictional works, was published in 2022 by KEW. In this article, I deal exclusively with the memoir part, and the methodological framework of my text is the concept of autobiographical literature as testimony, confession, and challenge described by Małgorzata Czermińska, in which the author-text-reader triad plays a key role. I also use the concept of trauma and its long-term effects on the human psyche, understanding both trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder in the literal, most basic psychological sense, related to the experience of an individual. I believe that although Aseyev’s text fits into the broad context of camp literature, beingone of the genres of memory, and the author’s direct comparisons of the Isolation prison with the Dachau concentration camp allow us to refer to the concept of historical trauma, my conclusion from reading the book is that its drama is most fully revealed when we look at it as the testimony of an individual – a person who experienced unimaginable cruelty. The record of such an experience plays not only the role of testimony – although it is also a testimony, as S. Aseyev often writes about – but it is also a form of rescue or self-therapy, which allows the individual to restore at least some of their psychological integrity.
