Arseniy Klochko (1885-1937): Contours of political evolution and career

Section: Biographical research

Abstract: The purpose of the article. The research is related to the studying of the biography of one of the participants of the Ukrainian national movement in Odesa, Arseniy Klochko (1885-1937). The purpose of the work is to write abiographical sketch of A. Klochko on the basis of available archival and published historical sources in order to clarify the main stages of his life path. The research methodology is based on the principles of historicism, objectivity, systematicity, as well as on general historical methods – chronological, retrospective, problemthematic, as well as source analysis and synthesis. The academic novelty of the work is that it is the first attempt to write a biographical sketch of one of the rectors of the Odesa Institute of Public Education and the director of the Odesa Institute of Professional Education in historical literature. Conclusions. A. Klochko belonged to the second echelon of the regional political mesoelite who participated in the revolutions of 1917-1921, as well as in Soviet construction after the Bolsheviks came to power in Ukraine and in Odesa in particular. The life of A. Klochko can be divided into stages of personality formation, main activity and final years. The stage of the main life activity of A. Klochko concentrated on the years 1904-1933. It can be divided into three periods – pre-revolutionary (1904-1917), revolutionary (1917-1920) and Soviet (1920-1933). The main areas of activity of A. Klochko were teaching, management for issues of education, enlightenment, rural cooperation. As a Ukrainian socialist revolutionary, he participated in the anti-Hetman, anti-Entente and anti-Denikin movements. After the establishment of Soviet regimein Odesa, he joined the Bolshevik party. In Soviet times, he worked in the educational field and even headed institutions of higher education. At the sametime, most often Arseniy Parfemiyovych was a “shadow” leader of socio-political processes, leaving the “palm of primacy” to more significant participants in revolutionary events. His former party affiliation became the basis for political repression, which led to the tragic end of his life. Therefore, the fate of A. Klochko became a accordant reflection of those contradictory processes that took placein the national history at the junction of three eras – imperial, revolutionary and Soviet.
