Don Quixote not La Manche: Oleksiy Andriyevsky and the memory discourse of Ukraine

Abstract: The purpose of the research is to understand Oleksiy Andriyevsky (1845-1902) as a Ukrainian intellectual of the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries and to determine his contribution to the formation of the Ukrainian memory discourse. The methodology of the research is based on personalistic and systemic approaches, historical-genetic, historical-systemic and historical typological methods, and the methodological tools of memory studies. The scientific novelty lies in the conceptual and systematic consideration of O. Andriyevsky’s intellectual activity in the preservation of the historical and national memory of Ukrainians. Conclusions. O. Andriyevsky’s formation as a Ukrainian intellectual took place under conditions of diverse ethnocultural and socio-political influences. The memory discourse of Ukrainian identity was established in O. Andriyevsky’s work over more than three decades and did not progress in a linear, upward fashion. The cultural, educational and memorial work of this figure was carried out in several important centres of the Ukrainian lands, in particular in Katerynoslav, Kyiv and Odesa, and was repeatedly interrupted due to the oppression of the tsarist regime. O. Andriyevsky actively collaborated with Ukrainian community leaders and a number of scientific societies in Kyiv and Odesa, and in the course of this interaction, he expanded the topography of memory and deepened his own understanding of the content, places, and space of Ukrainian memory. This memorial activity began to gain publicity invarious forms of intellectual work, namely in public lectures and presentations, publications in periodicals, public initiatives, etc. O. Andriyevsky’s multifaceted creative work was characterised by dynamism and initiative, covering a wide range of topics and spanning the 18th and 19th centuries. As a Ukrainian intellectual of the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries, O. Andriyevsky madea significant contribution to the creation of a memorial discourse of Ukrainian identity and to the progress of the Ukrainian nation-building process.
