Abstract: The article analyzes the activities and creative of a teacher, a writer, a prominent figure in the Old (Kiev’s) Gromada William Ludvigovich Berenshtam (1839–1904), devoted to the poet. The author proves that the memory of Taras Shevchenko, as a key figure of in the system of symbolic values "men of the Ukrainian sixties", a large extent determined the life strategy V. L. Berenshtam.
